Mo Nipshagen

Graduate Student & PhD Candidate for Neurotechnology @ Donders Institute

About Me

Hey there! I am Mo: a PhD candidate for Neurotechnology at the Donders Institute. I work on real-time motor decoding and Brain-Computer-Interfaces and enjoy data & data visualisation.

This profile will focus purely on my academic journey and pursuits.

Experience

Donders Institute; Maastricht University; UMC Utrecht

PhD Candidate for Real Time Motor Decoding

September 2022 -

Working with data collected from depth electrodes & EcoG, I am using machine learning to accurately & robustly decode signals from the motor cortex in real time.

This project is part of the INTENSE research consortium

Max-Planck Institute for Psycholinguistics, Nijmegen

VR Developer for an interactive Brain Visualisation

September 2019 - August 2022

mpi.nl

As a part of the neurobiology for language group, I worked on Virtual Reality UI & UX, as well as bringing the application to multiple platforms (Desktop, Web, Mobile, VR Headsets, CAVE). This included refactoring a large base of the code base, reworking the input and interaction system and designing a new UI layout system.

Education

Donders Institute, Radboud University

MSc Cognitive Neuroscience - Neurotechnology & Neural Computation

2019 - 2022

The Donders Institute is a renowned neuroscience institute offering a research focused programme.

During my studies at the Donders Institute I deepened my theoretical understanding of statistics & machine learning and how neuroscience and artificial intelligence can learn & influence each other.

My role as the webmaster in the CNS Journal as well as courses tailored to the processes in academia, I had some hands-on experience with the publishing process and the kind of scientific writing for journals and proposals.

Institute for Cognitive Science, Osnabrück University

BSc Cognitive Science

2015 - 2019

One of the first institutes in Germany to offer a bachelor's programme that engages the breadth of the field of cognitive science.

In my bachelor I was confronted with the multitude of disciplinaries that form cognitive science and have - most importantly - learned how to learn and engage with different kinds of information. After getting a basic education in all fields, I focused on Artifical Intelligence & Neuroinformatics, Neurophilosophy, and Computer Science.

During my studies I also was a member, and later head of, the student body organising events and facilitating communication between students and institute as representative on the institute board. I also worked in the mentoring programme for first year students of my bachelor programme.
